How to Seal Drafts Around Doors and Windows for Efficient Heating in Minnesota
Why Drafts Are a Big Problem in Minnesota Homes
When the winter wind howls across Minnesota, even the tiniest gap around a door or window can make your furnace work overtime. Drafts let precious warm air escape while pulling cold air in, creating uneven heating, higher bills, and extra strain on your HVAC system. Fixing drafts is one of the simplest and most effective ways to boost comfort and efficiency before winter really sets in.

DIY Ways to Seal Drafts
1. Weatherstripping
  • Apply peel-and-stick weatherstripping around door frames and window sashes.
  • This creates a tight seal and is easy to install without special tools.
2. Caulking Gaps and Cracks
  • Inspect the edges of windows and doors for visible gaps.
  • Use silicone-based caulk for exterior gaps and acrylic caulk for interior areas.
3. Door Sweeps and Draft Stoppers
  • Install a door sweep along the bottom of exterior doors to stop cold air from sneaking in.
  • For a quick fix, use a fabric draft stopper along the base of doors.
4. Plastic Window Insulation Kits
  • Affordable and widely available, these kits create a second barrier that traps heat indoors.
  • A must-have for older Minnesota homes with single-pane windows.
5. Thermal Curtains
  • Heavy, insulated curtains can help reduce heat loss, especially on north-facing windows.
  • Close them at night to trap heat, and open during the day to let sunlight in.

When DIY Fixes Aren’t Enough
Sometimes, drafts point to bigger issues—like aging windows, warped doors, or insufficient insulation. If your heating bills stay high even after DIY fixes, it may be time for professional evaluation. Sealing drafts plus regular furnace maintenance is the best combo for keeping your home efficient.

Thanks for sharing this, I had a problem with drafts last year too! It actually got so bad that I decided to call All In 1 Handyman to take care of it for me since they are one of the most trusted names when it comes to handyman services in Prosper, TX and they offer professional weather proofing services. They added fresh weatherstripping around doors, re-caulked windows, and put in door sweeps and it made a big difference in how warm the place feels.
