DIY Troubleshooting for Uneven Cooling or Heating in Minnesota Homes
Why Does My Home Have Hot and Cold Spots?
If you live in Minnesota, you know how important reliable heating and cooling is—especially when the weather swings from subzero winters to humid summers. But what if one room feels like a sauna while another feels like the North Shore in February? Uneven heating and cooling is a common complaint, and before you call in the pros, there are a few things you can check yourself.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps
1. Check and Replace Air Filters
Clogged filters restrict airflow, making some rooms harder to heat or cool. Filters should be replaced every 1–3 months, especially during peak AC or furnace season.

2. Inspect and Adjust Vents
Make sure supply vents are fully open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Partially closed vents can throw off airflow balance throughout the home.

3. Look for Drafts and Air Leaks
Windows, doors, and poorly insulated walls can let conditioned air escape, leaving some rooms warmer or cooler than others. Sealing leaks with weatherstripping or caulk can make a big difference.

4. Check Ductwork for Visible Leaks
Leaks in your duct system can prevent air from reaching certain rooms. Look for disconnected joints, loose sections, or dirt streaks around seams. Small leaks can be patched with mastic sealant or foil-backed tape (not regular duct tape).

5. Use Ceiling Fans Wisely
Fans don’t change the temperature, but they circulate air. In summer, run fans counterclockwise to push cool air down. In winter, run clockwise at low speed to circulate warm air.

6. Inspect Thermostat Placement
If your thermostat is in direct sunlight, near appliances, or in a drafty hallway, it may misread temperatures and cause uneven comfort. Consider relocating it to a more central area.

When DIY Isn’t EnoughIf you’ve tried these steps and your home still has hot and cold spots, it may be time for professional solutions like:
  • Zoning systems for different parts of the home
  • Duct balancing and sealing
  • System upgrades if your HVAC is undersized or aging
