How to Clean Air Vents and Registers in Your Minnesota Home
Why Cleaning Air Vents and Registers Matters

When your furnace or AC kicks on in Minnesota’s extreme seasons, you want clean, steady airflow. But over time, dust, pet hair, and debris collect on your air vents and registers.

Dirty vents don’t just look bad—they can:
  • Restrict airflow, making your HVAC system work harder
  • Lower indoor air quality, aggravating allergies or asthma
  • Spread musty odors throughout your home
The good news? Cleaning vents and registers is a quick DIY task that can improve comfort and efficiency.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Clean Air Vents and Registers

1. Turn Off Your HVAC System
Safety first—shut down your heating or cooling system before cleaning.

2. Remove the Vent Covers or Registers
Use a screwdriver for wall or ceiling vents. Floor registers usually pop out with ease.

3. Vacuum the Grates
Run a vacuum with a brush attachment over the grates to remove dust, crumbs, and pet hair.

4. Wash With Soap and Water
Soak registers in warm, soapy water. Use a soft brush to scrub away stubborn buildup. Let them dry completely before reinstalling.

5. Wipe Inside the Duct Opening (Optional)
Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe just inside the opening of the duct. (⚠️ Note: deeper cleaning of ductwork requires professional equipment. Air Comfort does not provide duct cleaning services, but we do help maintain system airflow and efficiency.)

6. Reinstall and Turn System Back On
Once vents and registers are dry, reinstall them and restart your system. Enjoy cleaner airflow!

How Often Should You Clean Air Vents in Minnesota?
  • Every 2–3 months: Light cleaning to prevent buildup.
  • More often if: You have pets, allergies, or live in a dusty area.
  • At filter changes: A good reminder to check vents when swapping your HVAC filter.

When to Call a ProIf you notice weak airflow even after cleaning vents and replacing filters, the issue may be with your ductwork or HVAC system. That’s when it’s time to call your trusted Minnesota HVAC professionals.
