Should I Leave My HVAC Fan On or Set It to Auto?
Look at your thermostat.
Somewhere on it you probably have a fan setting that says:
It looks like a tiny decision.
But it changes how your HVAC blower operates throughout the day.
For most homeowners, AUTO is the normal everyday setting.
That does not mean ON is never useful.
It means the two settings do very different things.
What Does AUTO Mean?
When the fan is set to AUTO, the blower generally runs when your HVAC system is actively heating or cooling.
Once that cycle ends, the blower shuts off.
During air-conditioning season, this is commonly the preferred setting because the blower and cooling system operate together as designed.
What Does ON Mean?
ON tells the blower to run continuously.
Even when the furnace is not heating and the AC is not cooling, air continues moving through the duct system.
That can create more constant circulation throughout the house.
But constant airflow is not automatically the same thing as better comfort.
Why AUTO Often Makes Sense During Cooling Season
Your air conditioner removes heat and moisture.
As humid indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture collects on that coil and drains away.
When the cooling cycle stops, there may still be moisture remaining on the coil.
Continuing to blow air across that wet coil can potentially move some of that moisture back into the home's air.
For homeowners already struggling with indoor humidity, running the blower continuously may work against the comfort they are trying to create.
Does Running the Fan Constantly Make the House Cooler?
Not by itself.
Moving air can make people feel more comfortable, just like a ceiling fan can.
But the HVAC blower does not create cooling unless the air-conditioning system is actually operating.
If the AC is off and the blower is running, you are primarily circulating the air already inside the house.
Can ON Help With Uneven Temperatures?
Sometimes homeowners use continuous fan operation because they have a hot upstairs or cold basement.
Circulation may help blend temperatures somewhat.
But if you have a substantial comfort imbalance, continuous fan operation should not become a substitute for figuring out why.
You may still have:

Running the blower more frequently means more air passes through the HVAC filter.

Leaving the fan ON is not automatically an indoor-air-quality strategy.

The blower uses electricity whenever it runs.
How much depends on the equipment and blower motor.
Modern variable-speed systems can operate differently from older HVAC systems, so there is no one universal operating-cost number.
That does not necessarily mean the cost is huge.
It simply means continuous operation is not free.
