It’s the middle of winter in Minnesota, and suddenly your heat cuts out. Your first instinct? Panic. But before you bundle up and call for emergency service, there’s one simple step that might just save the day: resetting your furnace.

We’ll walk you through how to reset your furnace safely—and how to know when it’s time to call in the pros.

🔄 What Does “Resetting” a Furnace Mean?
Resetting your furnace gives it a fresh start. It can help clear minor electrical glitches or temporary safety lockouts. Think of it like rebooting your Wi-Fi router—but for home heat.

🔧 Step-by-Step: How to Reset Your Furnace

1. Locate the Furnace Power Switch
Most furnaces have a switch that looks just like a light switch, mounted on or near the unit (often on the side or nearby wall). Flip the switch to the OFF position, wait about 30 seconds, and then turn it back ON.

2. Check the Circuit Breaker
Head to your breaker panel and look for the switch labeled “Furnace” or “HVAC.” If it’s in the middle or OFF position, flip it OFF completely, then back ON.

3. Find the Reset Button (If Equipped)
Some units—especially older models—have a red or yellow reset button on the blower motor or near the control board. Press it once firmly. If the system doesn’t restart, do not press it repeatedly.

⚠️ Tip: Never press the reset button more than once. Doing so can flood your system with fuel or cause further issues.

🧊 Still No Heat After a Reset?
If your furnace won’t restart after a reset, the issue might be more serious—like a bad ignitor, sensor failure, or airflow restriction. Continuing to reset a failing unit can cause damage or create a safety hazard.

That’s when it’s time to call a licensed technician. We’ll run diagnostics, identify the root issue, and get your heat back on fast.
