It’s 85° and rising, but your AC is barely keeping up—or worse, blowing warm air. If your system isn’t cooling properly, don’t panic. Here are the most common culprits, plus what you can do before making a service call.
1. Dirty Air Filter A clogged air filter restricts airflow, which means your AC has to work harder and cool less. Quick fix: Swap it out. It’s cheap, easy, and often the solution. 2. Low Refrigerant Levels If your system is blowing air, but it’s not cold, refrigerant could be low due to a leak. Call a pro: Recharging alone isn’t the answer—leaks need to be fixed, too. 3. Blocked or Dirty Coils Outdoor condenser coils can get clogged with grass, dirt, and leaves. Quick fix: Carefully hose off the unit (power off first), or schedule a pro cleaning. 4. Thermostat Trouble Sometimes it’s not the system—it’s the settings. Check: Thermostat is on “cool,” the temp is set correctly, and batteries are fresh. 5. It’s Just Too Hot Out In extreme Minnesota heat, older or undersized units may struggle to keep up. What to do: Use fans, close blinds, and consider a system upgrade if it happens often.
