Why Is My Fireplace Acting Up? DIY Tips Before You Call a Pro

Nothing ruins a cozy Minnesota evening faster than a fireplace that won’t start—or won’t stop smoking. Before you grab the phone (or a blanket), there are a few simple checks you can do yourself to troubleshoot a finicky fireplace.

Here’s what to know before you call in the pros.

🔥 1. Gas Fireplace Won’t Ignite? Try this quick checklist:
  • Check the pilot light – If it’s out, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it.
  • Inspect the thermostat or remote – Make sure it has working batteries and is set to “heat.”
  • Confirm the gas valve is open – Sounds simple, but it’s often missed.
  • Look for tripped breakers – Some electric ignition systems won’t work if the power’s out.
Still stuck? It might be a faulty thermocouple or ignition switch—best left to a pro.

🔌 2. Electric Fireplace Isn’t Heating? Try these DIY fixes:
  • Is it plugged in and switched on?
  • Check your breaker panel – Reset if tripped.
  • Inspect the heating element – If the fan runs but no heat comes out, the element might be worn out.
Note: Never open the unit if it’s plugged in. If it’s not heating and the basics are covered, it’s time for expert help.

🧯 3. Fireplace Smells Funny or Smokes Indoors? A strong smell or indoor smoke means something’s off.
  • Wood-burning? Your chimney may be blocked or need cleaning.
  • Gas? You might have residue buildup or improper venting.
Always treat weird smells seriously—especially if they smell like gas. Shut it off and call a pro immediately.

🧽 4. Dirty Glass or Weak Flame? Over time, gas fireplace glass gets foggy. The flame may also look weak or uneven. Try this:
  • Turn off the unit and let it cool completely.
  • Gently remove the glass panel.
  • Use a fireplace-safe glass cleaner to remove buildup.
  • Inspect and clean burner ports with a soft brush (if manufacturer-approved).
Still dim? The burner or logs may need adjustment.

🧊 5. When to Call in a Pro - If you've checked the basics and your fireplace still isn’t working right, it's best to get it inspected by a certified technician.
Call if:
  • Pilot won’t stay lit
  • You smell gas
  • There’s no airflow or heat
  • The unit makes loud or strange noises
