What Is R-454B and Why Are New AC Systems Using It?
If you shop for a new air conditioner or heat pump in 2026, you may see a refrigerant name you have never heard before:
For years, many residential systems used R-410A.
Now newer equipment is increasingly being designed around refrigerants with lower global-warming potential.
R-454B is one of them.
Why Did Refrigerants Change?
Federal rules have been transitioning many new residential and light-commercial AC and heat-pump systems away from higher-GWP refrigerants.
EPA's current Technology Transitions rules generally set a 700 GWP limit for new residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems, driving manufacturers toward alternatives such as R-454B and R-32.
R-454B has a substantially lower GWP than R-410A and is currently listed by EPA as acceptable for residential and light-commercial AC and heat-pump applications subject to specified use conditions.
Does R-454B Cool Better?
Refrigerant choice is only one part of equipment performance.
You should not choose a new HVAC system simply because one brochure says R-454B.

Is R-454B Flammable?
This is one of the questions homeowners see online.
R-454B carries an A2L safety classification, meaning it has lower flammability characteristics than higher-flammability refrigerants while still requiring equipment, installation practices and safety procedures designed specifically for it.
EPA lists R-454B as A2L and acceptable with use conditions for residential and light-commercial applications.
You should not be opening refrigerant systems yourself regardless of whether they use R-410A or R-454B.
Does My Existing R-410A AC Need to Be Replaced?

A refrigerant transition does not mean homeowners need to remove working R-410A equipment from their homes.
Existing systems can continue operating.
Service parts and R-410A components can still be used to service legacy R-410A equipment under EPA's rules.
