What Is R-454B and Why Are New AC Systems Using It?

If you shop for a new air conditioner or heat pump in 2026, you may see a refrigerant name you have never heard before:

R-454B

For years, many residential systems used R-410A.

Now newer equipment is increasingly being designed around refrigerants with lower global-warming potential.

R-454B is one of them.

THE IMPORTANT PART New refrigerant rules do not mean your existing R-410A air conditioner suddenly became obsolete.

Why Did Refrigerants Change?

Federal rules have been transitioning many new residential and light-commercial AC and heat-pump systems away from higher-GWP refrigerants.

EPA's current Technology Transitions rules generally set a 700 GWP limit for new residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems, driving manufacturers toward alternatives such as R-454B and R-32.

R-454B has a substantially lower GWP than R-410A and is currently listed by EPA as acceptable for residential and light-commercial AC and heat-pump applications subject to specified use conditions.

Does R-454B Cool Better?

Refrigerant choice is only one part of equipment performance.

You should not choose a new HVAC system simply because one brochure says R-454B.

Equipment performance still depends heavily on:

Equipment design
Efficiency
Compressor technology
Proper sizing
Installation
Airflow
The refrigerant transition is primarily about environmental characteristics and regulatory requirements for new equipment.

It is not an indication that every R-410A system suddenly stopped working.

Is R-454B Flammable?

This is one of the questions homeowners see online.

R-454B carries an A2L safety classification, meaning it has lower flammability characteristics than higher-flammability refrigerants while still requiring equipment, installation practices and safety procedures designed specifically for it.

EPA lists R-454B as A2L and acceptable with use conditions for residential and light-commercial applications.

WHAT SHOULD A HOMEOWNER DO WITH THAT INFORMATION? Make sure the equipment is installed and serviced by people trained for the refrigerant and equipment involved.

You should not be opening refrigerant systems yourself regardless of whether they use R-410A or R-454B.

Does My Existing R-410A AC Need to Be Replaced?

SHORT ANSWER No.

This is probably the most important point.

A refrigerant transition does not mean homeowners need to remove working R-410A equipment from their homes.

Existing systems can continue operating.

Service parts and R-410A components can still be used to service legacy R-410A equipment under EPA's rules.

If your current AC is working well, the fact that newer systems use a different refrigerant is not by itself a reason to replace it.

Will My Next AC Use R-454B?

Maybe.

Different manufacturers may use different approved lower-GWP refrigerants and equipment designs.

R-454B is common in the transition, but homeowners should focus on the complete system being proposed.

Ask:

  2. 02 Is your company trained to install and service it?
  3. 03 What safety features are built into the equipment?
  4. 04 How will future service work?
  5. 05 What warranty applies?
