Vacation Mode: Prepping Your HVAC System Before You Go
Heading out for a vacation is always exciting, but in the rush to pack and plan, many homeowners forget about preparing their HVAC system. Whether you’re going away for a few days or a couple of weeks, taking a few steps to prepare your HVAC unit can save you money on energy bills and avoid problems when you return. Here’s how you can ensure your HVAC system is as ready for your vacation as you are.

Check and Replace the Air Filter
Before you set off, check your HVAC air filter. A clean filter will ensure your system runs efficiently while you're away. If it’s clogged or dirty, replace it. This simple step can prevent unnecessary strain on your HVAC system and improve air quality while you’re gone.

Adjust the Thermostat
Setting your thermostat properly can lead to significant energy savings. In the summer, increase the thermostat setting so your AC isn’t working overtime to cool an empty house. Setting it around 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit is typically sufficient. In winter, set it to around 55-60 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing and save on heating costs. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, you can set these changes to revert back to your normal settings a day before you return, ensuring you come back to a comfortable home.

Clear the Area Around Units
Take a walk around your indoor and outdoor HVAC units. Make sure there’s no debris, such as leaves, twigs, or garbage, that could obstruct airflow. Inside, ensure your vents and returns are not blocked by furniture or curtains. Good airflow is crucial for efficient operation.

Consider a Smart Thermostat Upgrade
If you haven’t already, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. This technology allows you to control the temperature of your home remotely through your smartphone. It's especially useful if you’re away for an extended period and the weather changes unexpectedly.

Inspect for Leaks and Duct Issues
Do a quick visual check of your HVAC system for any signs of leaks or duct issues. Catching these problems before you leave can prevent more significant issues on your return.

Secure the System
If you will be away for a long time, consider turning off the water to your furnace humidifier in summer to prevent mold. If there’s a risk of a storm or power outages while you're away, you might also want to turn off the circuit breaker to your HVAC system to protect it from power surges.

Professional HVAC Check-Up
If possible, schedule a professional HVAC maintenance check-up before you leave, especially if you haven’t had your system serviced in a while. This check-up can ensure everything is in working order and provide peace of mind while you’re away.

Preparing your HVAC system for a vacation might be the last thing on your mind, but it’s a vital step to avoid wasting energy and coming back to potential problems. With these simple preparations, you can ensure that your system will greet you with the same comfort and efficiency as when you left.
