The thermostat fan setting seems simple.

On or auto.

But homeowners ask about it all the time, especially when rooms feel uneven, upstairs bedrooms get hot, or indoor air feels stale.

So should you leave your HVAC fan on?
The answer is: sometimes, but not always.

What Does the Fan Setting Do?
Your HVAC fan moves air through your ductwork. When set to auto, the fan runs only when heating or cooling is active. When set to on, the fan runs continuously, even when the furnace or AC is not actively heating or cooling.

Benefits of Leaving the Fan On - running the fan continuously can help:
  • Even out temperatures
  • Improve air circulation
  • Reduce hot and cold spots
  • Move air through filters more often
  • Keep air from feeling stagnant
This can be helpful in Minnesota homes with upstairs comfort issues or older ductwork.

Downsides of Leaving the Fan On - leaving the fan on can also:
  • Use more electricity
  • Circulate humidity if the AC is not actively dehumidifying
  • Make the home feel drafty
  • Move dust if filters are dirty
  • Increase wear on older blower motors
In summer, running the fan constantly may sometimes make the house feel more humid because moisture on the AC coil can be pushed back into the air after cooling stops.

When Auto Is Better - auto is usually better when:
  • Humidity is high
  • Your system is older
  • You are trying to save energy
  • Airflow is already balanced
  • You do not need constant circulation
The Department of Energy notes that dirty or clogged AC filters reduce airflow and efficiency, so filter maintenance matters no matter which fan setting you use.

What About Variable-Speed Systems?
Variable-speed systems are different. They are designed to run longer, quieter, and more efficiently at lower speeds. For these systems, continuous air circulation can be more comfortable and less noticeable. That is where the “quiet system” conversation really starts to matter.

Should I leave my HVAC fan on? Leaving the fan on can help even out temperatures and improve circulation, but it may increase energy use or humidity in some homes. Many Minnesota homeowners are best served by using auto unless airflow problems or system design suggest otherwise.

There is no one-size-fits-all fan setting. If your home has hot upstairs bedrooms, cold basements, or stale air, fan settings may help. But if humidity is high or energy use is a concern, auto may be the better move. Like most HVAC questions, the answer depends on the house and Minnesota homes like to keep things interesting.
