Should You Cover Your Outdoor AC Unit for Winter?

WINTER AC CARE • OUTDOOR CONDENSER • MINNESOTA HVAC

Your air conditioner spent all summer working outside.

Now Minnesota winter is coming.

Naturally, homeowners want to protect it.

SO SHOULD YOU Wrap the whole outdoor condenser in a weatherproof cover until spring?
USUALLY, NO Fully wrapping a cooling-only outdoor unit is generally unnecessary and can create problems of its own.

Outdoor AC Equipment Is Built to Live Outdoors

The condenser was designed to tolerate weather.

That includes:

RAIN Normal outdoor exposure
TEMPERATURE Seasonal temperature swings
SNOW Typical winter conditions
OUTDOOR LIFE Year-round exterior placement
THE EQUIPMENT DOES NOT NEED A WINTER VACATION INDOORS Outdoor HVAC equipment is built with outdoor exposure in mind.

What Are You Actually Protecting It From?

Ordinary snow falling onto the equipment is generally less concerning than physical damage or unusual conditions around it.

Falling leaves
Branches
Roof runoff
Icicles
Heavy debris
Animals attempting to nest
The most useful protection depends more on where the condenser sits than on the fact that winter is coming.

Why Fully Wrapping the Unit Can Be a Problem

A completely enclosed cover can create conditions you were trying to avoid.

FULL COVER Unit becomes enclosed
→
LESS AIR MOVEMENT Moisture may become trapped
→
SHELTER Animals may find it attractive
THE GOAL IS NOT Turn the condenser into a winter cabin.

What About a Top Cover?

Some homeowners use manufacturer-approved protection over the top of a cooling-only outdoor unit to reduce falling leaves or debris while leaving the sides open.

BETTER APPROACH WHEN APPROPRIATE Protection focused on falling debris while maintaining open sides
VS.
USE CAUTION Improvised full enclosure that traps moisture or restricts airflow
Before adding any seasonal cover, check the equipment manufacturer's instructions and recommendations for that specific unit.

Heat-Pump Owners: Different Rule

This is important.

IF THE OUTDOOR UNIT OPERATES DURING WINTER Do not cover it as though it were a cooling-only condenser.

A heat pump uses the outdoor unit during heating operation.

WINTER HEATING CALL Heat pump runs
→
OUTDOOR UNIT Needs airflow
→
COVER? Not while operating
KNOW WHAT YOU OWN Cooling-only condenser and heat pump are not the same winter situation.

Keep the Area Around the Unit Clear

Fall leaves can accumulate around the condenser.

Before snow arrives:

01 Clear leaves
02 Trim vegetation appropriately
03 Remove loose debris
04 Move items leaning against the unit
Keeping the area clear also makes spring startup and future service easier.

Watch Roof and Gutter Runoff

If water repeatedly pours onto the outdoor unit and freezes, the real issue may be the drainage above it.

ROOF / GUTTER Water falls repeatedly
→
OUTDOOR UNIT Repeated ice exposure
→
BETTER FIX Correct the water source where appropriate
DON'T USE A COVER TO HIDE A DRAINAGE PROBLEM If unusual water or ice is repeatedly hitting the equipment, address the source when possible.

Do Not Forget the Cover in Spring

Every year somebody starts the AC while a winter cover is still restricting airflow.

WINTER Seasonal protection added
→
SPRING Weather warms up
→
BEFORE COOLING Remove the cover
If you use any seasonal protection, make removing it part of your spring AC checklist.

Your AC Does Not Need to Be Gift-Wrapped

Minnesota winter is harsh.

Fortunately, outdoor HVAC equipment was not designed under the assumption that every homeowner would build it a little house.

DO Keep the area clean
DO Protect against unusual debris where needed
DO Follow manufacturer guidance
DON'T Automatically wrap the entire unit
SIMPLE WINTER APPROACH Protect against unusual conditions—not normal Minnesota weather.
NOT SURE WHETHER YOUR OUTDOOR UNIT IS AN AC OR HEAT PUMP?

Know What You Have Before You Cover Anything

Air Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning helps homeowners throughout Anoka County, the North Metro and surrounding Minnesota communities understand how to prepare cooling and heat-pump equipment for winter.

If you're unsure what kind of outdoor equipment you have, whether a seasonal cover is appropriate or whether ice, runoff or debris around the unit needs attention, we can help.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Winter AC Cover Questions

Can snow hurt my outdoor AC condenser?

Outdoor equipment is designed for normal weather exposure. Falling debris, unusual ice conditions, roof runoff and physical damage are typically more concerning than ordinary snowfall.

Should I wrap the entire AC with a tarp?

Fully enclosing a cooling-only outdoor unit can trap moisture and may create shelter for rodents or other animals. Check the manufacturer's recommendations before using any seasonal cover.

Can I cover a heat pump during winter?

Not while it is operating. A heat pump uses its outdoor unit during winter heating and requires airflow to operate properly.
