Emergency Heating: What to Do If Your System Fails

A furnace failure in the middle of a Minnesota cold snap is no joke. But before you panic, here’s what you should do:

• Check your thermostat. Make sure it has power and is set to “heat.”
• Inspect your breaker box. A tripped breaker can stop your system cold.
• Ensure the filter isn’t clogged. A dirty filter can cause shutdowns.
• Check the furnace’s intake/exhaust pipes. Snow or ice buildup can block airflow.

While you wait for a technician:

• Use space heaters safely (no extension cords, 3-ft clearance).
• Layer up, use blankets, and gather in one room.
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to prevent frozen pipes.
