Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling?

Air is coming from the vents.

The thermostat says cooling.

That is one of the most frustrating AC problems because the system looks like it is working.

It just isn't accomplishing the thing you actually need it to do.

The goal is figuring out which part of the cooling process is breaking down.

Start With the Thermostat

Before assuming the AC itself failed, check the basics.

Make sure the thermostat is actually set to:

MODE COOL

The temperature setting should also be below the current indoor temperature.

Also check the fan setting.

For most homes during cooling season, AUTO is a reasonable everyday setting.

AUTO Blower runs with the cooling cycle.
ON Blower may keep circulating indoor air even when cooling is not actively operating.
If the fan is set to ON, it can seem like the AC is running when you may actually just be feeling indoor air moving.

Check the Air Filter

A heavily restricted filter can reduce airflow through the HVAC system.

That matters because your air conditioner depends on moving the correct amount of air across the evaporator coil.

Restricted airflow can contribute to:

Weak cooling
Longer runtimes
Frozen coils
Poor room comfort
Equipment stress

If the filter is obviously dirty and due for replacement, change it with the appropriate size and type for your system.

Do not automatically jump to the thickest or most restrictive filter available. More filtration is not useful if the HVAC system cannot move enough air through it.

Is the Outdoor Unit Running?

Look at the outdoor condenser from a safe distance.

When the thermostat is calling for cooling, is the outdoor equipment operating?

You may hear the compressor and see the fan running.

If the indoor blower is operating but the outdoor unit is completely silent, the system may have an electrical, control or equipment issue.

STOP HERE Do not remove electrical panels or start poking around inside the equipment.

That is the point where professional diagnosis becomes appropriate.

Is Airflow Weak?

Put your hand near several supply registers.

Is air moving normally?

Or does it feel dramatically weaker than usual?

Weak airflow can be caused by several things, including:

Filter restrictions
Blower problems
Frozen evaporator coil
Duct restrictions
Closed registers
Damaged ductwork
Airflow imbalance
COOLING REQUIRES BOTH
Making conditioned air + Moving it through the home

You can have functioning refrigeration equipment and still have poor comfort if the air is not being distributed properly.

Look for Ice

Ice on the refrigerant line or around indoor cooling components is not normal.

An AC system can freeze because of issues such as:

Insufficient airflow
Refrigeration problems
Equipment malfunctions
IF YOU SEE SUBSTANTIAL ICE Continuing to run the cooling system is usually not the solution.

Turn cooling off and have the cause evaluated.

The ice is a symptom. You still need to determine why it froze.

Could It Be Low on Refrigerant?

Possibly.

But here's an important distinction:

REFRIGERANT IS NOT GASOLINE A properly operating sealed air-conditioning system should not routinely consume refrigerant.

If the refrigerant level is low, the better question is:

Why?

Simply adding refrigerant without understanding whether there is a leak can turn into an expensive cycle of repeating the same problem.

What If the AC Runs All Day?

Long runtime during very hot Minnesota weather does not automatically mean something is broken.

Properly sized equipment may operate for extended periods when outdoor conditions are near design temperatures.

CAN BE NORMAL Long runtime while the house maintains temperature
MORE CONCERNING Continuous runtime while indoor temperature keeps climbing

That tells us the system is not keeping up with the cooling load.

What Can You Safely Check Before Calling?
