9 Signs It's Time for a Furnace Replacement

Furnaces are known for lasting a long time. According to Bob Villa, HVAC systems can last 15 to 20 years. Once your HVAC system starts getting older, it's a good idea to watch out for these signs you need furnace replacement.

1. Furnace Age
An aging furnace doesn't mean you need a replacement, but it's a good idea to get one ahead of time. Older systems are more likely to break, so you'll spend more on repairs. They may also go out inconveniently, like right before winter hits. You can save yourself a lot of stress by getting a new one before yours breaks down.

2. Energy Usage
Old, outdated furnace models are known for using high amounts of energy. If you notice that your furnace is constantly kicking on or that you have extremely high utility bills, take a look at the model number on your furnace. Research it to see if it's energy efficient. If it's not, it's time for an upgrade.

3. Constant Repairs
As furnaces end their lifespan, they'll start to break down. One component after another will go wrong. Within a few months, you'll wonder if you should get a new one. The answer to that question is yes. This is one of the first signs that it's time for you to schedule a replacement.

4. Carbon Monoxide
Damaged furnaces may start to leak carbon monoxide. This gas is colorless and odorless, making it essential to have carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home. You can also tell by looking at the flame. The flame will usually turn yellow instead of blue if your furnace is leaking carbon dioxide. This is a sign that you may need a new one.

5. Costly Repairs
When it's time to repair a furnace, you need to consider the cost. Outdated furnaces may require more work, and parts are often more expensive because they are harder to find. First, get an estimate from someone who specializes in furnace repairs. Then, compare that cost to the price of a new furnace. It may be more cost-effective in the long run to get a replacement.

6. Unusual Sounds
Unusual noises like banging and clanging in your furnace are a surefire sign of something wrong with your HVAC system. This may be a loose component. However, the constant banging around usually causes damage to other parts of your furnace. It's typically cheaper to opt for a furnace replacement instead of dealing with all the damage to your current furnace.

7. Uneven Heating
A furnace should work well enough to heat your entire home without struggling. A struggling furnace will only heat parts of your home well. You'll notice a significant temperature difference when walking from one room to another. This is a standard indicator that your furnace is not efficient enough to meet your home's needs. Upgrading with a furnace replacement can help everyone in the house stay warm and cozy all winter.

8. Air Quality
A furnace handles multiple jobs. One thing that it does is filter out the air that comes in from the outside or through the ducts. After filtering the air, it heats it and uses it to warm up your home. Poor air quality indicates that your furnace is not properly filtering the air. You may notice an increase in allergy symptoms when the heat increases. More dust in a house is another indicator you have poor air quality. This is a common issue in older furnaces. A furnace replacement is a quick and easy solution.

9. Compliance
More people are opting for environmentally friendly options, and the government is cracking down on products that don't meet the new standard. Unfortunately, that is a lot of older furnaces. It's essential to contact a company that specializes in furnace replacement to determine if your current model complies with new laws and regulations. If it's not, it's essential to get a new one as soon as possible to stay in compliance.

If your furnace heats your home unevenly or you hear unusual sounds, these are both indicators you need a new one. We can provide a thorough inspection to determine if you need repairs or a replacement. Contact Air Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning Inc today to schedule your appointment.
